Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP is a cutting-edge behavioural model about how your mind works so that you can run it more effectively. Your behaviour is the result of your perception, a movie that you run in your mind of which you are in complete control. As you change the movie, you change your behaviour. It is as simple as that. Richard Bandler, one of the co-founders of NLP said that there are no unresourceful people, there are only people running unresourceful programs efficiently.

NLP, as a model of human functioning, assumes that people have all the resources that they need. NLP puts in your hands a highly efficient set of tools for updating our mind so that we can develop more effective movies and thus a better behaviour.

NLP is all about how your mind works. It is a process oriented psychology which deals with the "how" of a problem and is not concerned with the what (content) and the "what" (reasons, excuses), the last two getting you nowhere nearer to the solution. NLP is based on the idea that we experience the world through our senses and translate sensory information in to thought processes, both conscious and unconscious. Thought processes activate the neurological system, which affects physiology, emotions and behaviour. NLP is about learning how to manage our neurological system optimally.

Much of NLP learning is about learning how to think effectively and communicate with yourself and others more effectively. NLP also teaches people how to recode their experiences, and organize their internal programming, so as to get what they want.

In human communication, the five senses are like five doors we open to take in communication. But we tend to use the visual (seeing) auditory (hearing) and kinaesthetic (feeling) channels more in our communications. The olfactory (hearing) and gustatory (tasting) groups are for all practical purposes, attached to the kinaesthetic group. The visual person selects pictures from memory to make sense of what is happening and to describe anything. The auditory person, on the other hand, tends to talk to themselves a lot. The feeling person is normally slow, with a gruff voice, going inside and feeling what they are saying, always moving and gesturing and happy in the company of others. The "process words" give us an insight in to how a person is processing information or thinking. NLP focuses on these insights to connect better with people and ensure more effective communication, a crucial ingredient of business and person to person interaction.
